Faits rapides: One of the last surviving medieval town gates in Austria, it guarded the entrance to Hainburg with a portcullis and drawbridge that still function today. The gate takes its name from the Fischer (fishermen) district, whose residents maintained the nearby Danube fishing rights for centuries.

Points forts: Climb the 96 winding stone steps to the top of the tower and you can spot the exact spot where the Danube once lapped against the city walls. The original wooden portcullis, still hanging overhead, is the same one that defenders would have dropped in times of attack over 700 years ago.

• Bring a flashlight to spot the 14th-century graffiti scratched into the upper chamber walls.
• The caretaker lives next door and can open the tower if you arrive during posted hours and ring the bell.
