Vienna is a safe, well ordered city for tourists, with an efficient public transport system and a low-pressure tipping culture. The main things to watch are unofficial airport taxis, ticket validation on public transport, and occasional street hustles targeted at visitors near central sights and stations.

Comment ça marche: Outside the airport terminal, individuals approach arriving travellers posing as taxi drivers, offering fixed or inflated fares. Their vehicles are unlicensed and meters may not run.
Comment l'éviter: Walk to the official taxi rank only, or book via the regulated apps (Uber, Bolt, Wiener Taxi, Taxi 40100). Confirm the meter is on before you start.
Comment ça marche: Someone hands you a flower, bracelet, or small trinket and then demands payment for it. If you refuse, they become insistent or guilt-tripping.
Comment l'éviter: Do not make eye contact, do not accept the item, and keep walking. Simply say no and continue past them.
Comment ça marche: Small groups work together, one bumping or crowding you while another lifts a wallet or phone. Often staged around busy metro entrances or crowded sights.
Comment l'éviter: Keep bags zipped and in front. Avoid standing near metro doors, and do not stop for people asking for directions or signatures.
Comment ça marche: Locations near major sights offer menus without prices or charge for items not listed. The bill comes with surprising totals, especially for drinks.
Comment l'éviter: Only sit where prices are clearly shown on the menu before ordering. Ask for the menu to be pointed out if anything is unclear.
Comment ça marche: Riders board buses or trams without a validated ticket during short hops, since some assume the short ride is not worth buying one. Seasonal inspectors fine consistently.
Comment l'éviter: Always buy and validate before boarding, even for a single stop. A 2.40 EUR ticket is far cheaper than the 105 EUR fine.
Comment ça marche: Currency exchange booths near central stations or the old town display headline rates but add fees or commissions that inflate the real cost. Some also push dynamic currency conversion.
Comment l'éviter: Use a bank ATM or pay by card for the best rate. If you must exchange cash, compare the final amount received, not the displayed rate.

Vienna International Airport (VIE)
Tarif taxi équitable (officiel, en journée): 36 € - 45 €. Use only the official ranked taxis at VIE. Official fares to the centre typically run 36-45 EUR. Metered fares are regulated, but always confirm the meter is running and refuse fixed-price offers from touts inside the arrivals hall.
Meilleure alternative: City Airport Train (CAT), direct to Wien Mitte (16 €, environ 16 min)
Pourboire: Tipping is expected but modest. Round up the bill in restaurants or leave 5-10%, round up taxis to the nearest euro, and tip tour guides a small amount only if satisfied. Tips are appreciated but not demanded.
Couvert et frais de service: No automatic service/coperto charge in Vienna. Service is included in the menu prices, so extra tips are voluntary. Menu prices must include VAT. If a cover or bread charge appears, it should be stated on the menu before ordering.
Always select to be charged in euros (local currency) and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Be cautious with independent ATMs in tourist areas that advertise high withdrawal limits, as some charge above-average fees. Paying by card is widespread in Vienna.
