Late June through September, when the snow clears off high trails and the lakes thaw to clear turquoise. Weekday mid-mornings give the quietest stretches of path.

Entry to the park itself is free; you only pay for parking or the gondola lift up from the valley floor. Bring a packed lunch, since the few stalls near the base station charge roughly three times normal prices.

Faits rapides: Les prairies d'altitude abritent ici 1 300 espèces de plantes, dont plus de la moitié ne poussent nulle part ailleurs sur Terre. Sur les pentes, 186 lacs glaciaires sont disséminés, mais les bergers locaux n'ont jamais donné de nom qu'à dix d'entre eux.
Points forts: Au plus profond des bois se dresse le pin de Baikushev, un pin de Bosnie estimé à environ 1 300 ans et totalement non gardé, si bien que vous pouvez presser une paume contre une écorce antérieure à Christophe Colomb. Depuis sa clairière, l'arène rocheuse de Kazanite s'élève comme une vague figée, ses parois abruptes retenant la neige jusqu'au milieu de l'été.

- Wear layered clothing and sturdy boots, because trails cross snow patches even in August.
- Catch the lakes at first light, when the still water mirrors the peaks before the mid-morning wind ripples it.
- Skip the crowded loops near the entrance and ask at the ranger hut about the quieter Kamenitsa circuit.
- Start by 7:00 a.m. so you reach the ridge before thunderclouds build in the early afternoon.
