À propos

Faits rapides: Perched on a rocky hill 40 meters above the river, this medieval stronghold once guarded the approaches to Plovdiv. Its massive walls and nine surviving towers date from the 13th century, when it served as a fortress for the Bulgarian tsars.

Points forts: Look closely at the southeastern wall, where a single stone relief of a rider on horseback is carved into the masonry, a rare surviving medieval symbol. Climb to the highest tower at sunset, when the sun floods the whole courtyard in amber light and the entire Plovdiv valley spreads out below you.

Conseils d'initiés

  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, the stone steps are uneven and can get slippery after rain.
  • Bring water, there are no shops or drinking fountains once you enter the fortress grounds.
  • The best photo spot is from the northwest tower looking back toward the main gate and mountain backdrop.
  • Skip the midday heat in summer, the exposed hilltop has almost no shade.
