Faits rapides: One of the best-preserved star-shaped fortresses in Northern Europe, its ramparts and moats have guarded Copenhagen's harbor for over 350 years. The grounds still serve as an active military area while welcoming over 3 million visitors annually to its park-like grounds.
Points forts: Every morning at 11:45, a small squad of uniformed soldiers marches from the barracks to haul down the Danish flag, a ritual that has played out almost without interruption since the 1660s. Watch from the ramparts as the deep red flag with its white cross snaps against the wind, and you'll hear the sharp commands echoing across the moat.

- Enter from the main gate on Kastelsvej for the most dramatic first view of the star-shaped moats and ramparts.
- The windmill near the south rampart is the best photo spot, especially in golden hour light.

- Skip the interior of the buildings unless you have military business, the real magic is the fortress layout and grassy walls.
