Faits rapides: Esslingen am Neckar hugs the banks of the Neckar River just southeast of Stuttgart, and its medieval Altstadt packs over 200 half-timbered houses into a compact, walkable core. The city hosts the largest medieval Christmas market in the region, drawing roughly one million visitors each December.
Points forts: Climb the 292 steps of the Pliensau tower, and you'll find one of the few preserved medieval city gates in Germany where you can still walk the original cobbled ramp used by merchants and guards. On the first weekend of August, locals dress in full medieval regalia and reenact a historical festival that transforms the entire old town into a living 15th-century market scene.
