Meilleur moment pour visiter

Visit early in the morning right when it opens at 8:30 AM to avoid tour bus crowds that arrive mid-morning. October and November offer cooler temperatures and far fewer visitors than summer months.

Conseils budget

General admission is 12 euros, but the combined ticket for the museum plus the archaeological site costs just the same price, effectively making the site free. Students from EU countries enter free with valid ID, and all visitors get free entry on the first Sunday of each month from November through March.

À propos

Faits rapides: Houses over 6,000 artifacts spanning 1,500 years of history, from the Mycenaean era through the Roman period. The museum's most prized possession is the Charioteer of Delphi, one of only three surviving bronze chariot statues from ancient Greece.

Points forts: The Charioteer of Delphi survived a massive rockfall in 373 BCE that buried the entire sanctuary, preserving the statue with its inlaid crystal eyes and silver eyelashes perfectly intact. You can circle this 1.8-meter bronze figure and see the exact chisel marks the sculptor made 2,500 years ago.

Conseils d'initiés

  • Skip the ground floor galleries first and head straight upstairs to Hall 11 where the Charioteer stands alone as the centerpiece before crowds gather.
  • The Siphnian Treasury frieze on the ground floor is easy to miss but shows the finest surviving example of Archaic Greek relief sculpture.
  • Bring a small flashlight to better see the faint painted details and inscriptions on the marble statues, since the gallery lighting is deliberately dim for preservation.
  • Combine your visit with the archaeological site right next door, but do the museum first to understand the artifacts in their original context.
