Entry to the island is free and you can get here on foot via the causeway, or by motorboat for a few quetzals. Food and drinks on the island cost more than in the town of Santa Elena, so rather enjoy your meal on the mainland.

Faits rapides: Une petite île du lac Petén Itzá est reliée à la terre ferme par un sentier long de seulement 500 mètres. Les Itza indigènes y avaient autrefois établi leur capitale Tayasal, la dernière ville maya indépendante, tombée seulement en 1697.

Points forts: Le soir, toute la petite ville sur l'île se transforme en un éclat coloré lorsque les façades pastel des maisons s'illuminent et se reflètent dans la surface sombre du lac. Depuis le point de vue au bout de l'île, vous voyez le sentier se transformer en une ligne de feu reliant l'île à la terre ferme, exactement là où se déroulaient autrefois les rituels mayas.
