Faits rapides: Roughly 200 fabric and fashion shops pack the pedestrian lane, many still run by the same families for three or four generations. Shoppers haggle over bolts of batik and lace beneath a white clock tower that has kept time over the market since the late 1800s.

Points forts: Look up at the northern end of the lane and you will spot a three-story heritage building topped with a working clock where tailors measure suit lapels at open counters. Inside, vendors unroll ten-meter lengths of batik so the wax patterns catch the light, and the blend of coffee and thread dust smells almost unchanged from a century ago.

• Bring cash in small denominations, since most stalls do not accept cards.
• Wear a light long-sleeved shirt, because some fabric counters are dusty and the lane has little air movement.
• Ask for the oldest bolts of batik stored on top shelves for better patterns at lower prices.
• Skip midday on weekends when the lane gets shoulder-to-shoulder and go early instead.
