Faits rapides: Le sentier grimpe d'environ 1 500 mètres depuis la base pour atteindre de fraîches forêts de pins où les températures chutent nettement par rapport à la ville en contrebas. Les cendres volcaniques du sommet voisin fertilisent le sol, de sorte que des orchidées sauvages et des fougères bordent le chemin en abondance surprenante.

Points forts: Vers le kilomètre 4 du sentier, on franchit une crête étroite où le sol est encore chaud sous les pieds, un rappel vivant de l'activité volcanique qui couve en dessous. Les guides locaux signalent souvent la fissure exacte d'où des émanations de vapeur s'élèvent visiblement après de fortes pluies, un phénomène que la plupart des randonneurs dépassent sans le remarquer.

Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, as volcanic scree sections get slick even when the weather looks dry.
Take the left fork at the second junction; most groups head right and miss the quieter ridge with better photo angles of the crater.
Bring a windbreaker even in the dry season, temperatures at the top can drop to 15°C while the base stays warm.
Skip the weekend rush and hike on a Tuesday or Wednesday when the trail sees less than a third of the weekend traffic.
