Le dôme immense, offrant une vue spectaculaire sur la ville, a été conçu avec une telle précision que son ombre marque parfaitement le jour et l’heure sur le sol de la basilique.
Points forts: Michel-Ange a conçu l’imposant dôme, qui s’élève à près de 136 mètres, et l’acoustique intérieure est si précise qu’un simple chuchotement près de l'autel peut être entendu à travers la vaste nef. Sous la basilique se trouve la nécropole où l’on croit que Saint Pierre est enterré, et vous pouvez en fait voir des tombes romaines antiques à quelques mètres sous vos pieds, un contraste saisissant avec l'art de la Renaissance au-dessus.

- Dress respectfully, cover shoulders and knees, and carry a lightweight scarf for quick coverage at security if needed.
- Arrive 30–45 minutes before opening to get ahead of the main security line and enjoy clearer views of the nave.
- Climb the dome first if you want fewer people in photos, take the stairs for better vantage points and cheaper fare, or the lift for part of the way if you have mobility limits.
- Skip Scavi unless you booked well in advance, and photograph the nave from the central aisle and the dome base for classic wide-angle shots.
