Faits rapides: Bien que bien plus petite que sa ville sœur, environ 75 % de cette ville dort encore sous les rues modernes qui la surplombent. La vague pyroclastique mortelle de 79 apr. J.-C. a carbonisé le bois si complètement que des lits, des portes et même un pain d'origine ont survécu, tandis qu'environ 300 victimes se blottissaient dans des abris à bateaux au bord de l'eau.
