Faits rapides: Granite columns from an ancient Roman portico rise directly from the grass of this city-center park. Excavations here uncovered the remains of Syracuse's Roman forum, once the political and commercial heart of the city.

Points forts: The massive granite columns lying on the ground came all the way from Egypt, shipped across the Mediterranean during the Roman Empire. You can walk right up to them and touch the same stone that Roman citizens touched nearly 2,000 years ago.
