Mount Misen

Meilleur moment pour visiter

Go in late autumn or early spring for cool hiking weather and clear skies; weekday mornings mean thinner crowds on the trails.

Conseils budget

The ropeway costs about 1,000 yen each way (180 yen one-way after a combo pass), while hiking is free. A JR West Pass covers the ferry to Miyajima, and arriving before 9 AM avoids the tourist rush and lets you hike in peace.

À propos

Faits rapides: Around 535 meters tall, the climb takes most hikers two to three hours through mossy cedar forests. Over 1,000 wild deer roam the island, and you'll likely spot them along the mountain's lower trails.

Points forts: At the summit, a small temple room holds a 500-year-old flame reportedly lit by the monk Kobo Daishi, and lanterns in the hall have been burning continuously using that same fire source. The stone steps near the top open to a rocky overlook where the sea spreads out below you on clear days, with the torii gate appearing almost miniature from this height.

Conseils d'initiés

  • Wear sturdy shoes with grip, the stone steps get slick with moss after rain
  • Take the Momijidani trail up and the Daisho-in route down to see two very different sides of the mountain
  • Skip the summit crowds at noon and aim for the 4 PM window when the ropeway lines shrink
  • Bring water and a light layer, the temperature drops noticeably above the treeline
