Faits rapides: Ce site se trouve à environ 70 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Nairobi et abrite l'un des plus anciens gisements du Paléolithique moyen d'Afrique de l'Est, avec des découvertes vieilles d'environ 200 000 ans. Les premières fouilles systématiques y ont été menées par Mary Leakey, qui, avec son équipe, a mis au jour des milliers d'outils en pierre et de fragments d'animaux disparus.
Points forts: Sous un rocher en surplomb de la vallée, des milliers de haches à main et d'éclats de pierre reposent encore exactement comme ils ont été laissés il y a des milliers d'années, un instantané rare d'un ancien lieu de travail. Les scientifiques y ont compté environ 38 000 outils en pierre sur une surface relativement petite, si bien qu'on croit presque entendre le sifflement du polissage en marchant entre les éclats.

- Wear sturdy shoes or high-top sneakers, because the ground around the excavations is loose and uneven.
- Ask the ranger about the remote viewpoints above the valley, which offer the best views of the sandstone formations.
- Bring binoculars and water, there are no shops or kiosks on the grounds themselves.
- Come early on weekdays, then you will have the grounds almost to yourself and can give the guide more time for detailed explanations.
