Faits rapides: Just 15 meters underwater sits a flat-topped underwater plateau where thresher sharks come to get cleaned by tiny fish. The sharks rise from depths of 300 meters each morning, making this one of the most reliable places on Earth to see these elusive creatures.

Points forts: Thresher sharks use their whip-like tails, which can be as long as their bodies, to stun prey with a single explosive crack. Divers watch from a shallow 20-meter depth as these 12-foot sharks glide up from the abyss to visit cleaner wrasse stations on the sunlit plateau.

• Skip the afternoon dives here, thresher sharks almost never appear after 10 AM.
• Rent a dive computer and monitor your depth carefully, the cleaning stations sit right at 20 meters with no decompression stop margin.
• Bring a wide-angle lens with good low-light performance, the sharks appear just as the sun rises.
• Book a dive shop that limits groups to 4 divers per guide, larger groups scare the sharks away.
