Zakopane is a very popular mountain resort and generally safe, with low violent crime, but the crowds at Krupówki and the bus station attract the usual tourist-targeting scams: overpriced unlicensed taxis, exchange booths with poor rates, and restaurant bills with hidden charges. The main practical worries are paying fair taxi rates and watching belongings in busy areas during peak season.

Comment ça marche: Drivers approach arrivals outside the terminal offering a ride to Zakopane at inflated flat rates, often without a meter or official markings.
Comment l'éviter: Use the official taxi rank or book through Uber, Bolt or iTaxi. Agree on a price before starting if meter is absent.
Comment ça marche: Exchange booths near Krupówki and the main bus station advertise attractive rates but apply large commissions or hidden spreads.
Comment l'éviter: Compare rates, ask about commission first, or withdraw PLN from a bank ATM. Decline dynamic currency conversion.
Comment ça marche: Some restaurants add bread, cover or service charges to bills without mentioning them beforehand.
Comment l'éviter: Check the menu for prices and any service note. Review the bill line by line before paying.
Comment ça marche: In packed seasonal crowds, groups use distractions like bumping or asking questions while an accomplice lifts wallets or phones.
Comment l'éviter: Keep bags zipped and in front, and keep phones in inner pockets in crowds.
Comment ça marche: Some short-term rentals post photos of a different property or location, then guests arrive to a worse room far from the advertised spot.

Kraków John Paul II International Airport (KRK)
Tarif taxi équitable (officiel, en journée): 250 zł - 350 zł (57 € - 80 €). Agree on the price before getting in, or use Uber, Bolt or iTaxi at the airport. Unlicensed drivers approach arrivals; use only official rank taxis or apps.
Meilleure alternative: PKP Intercity train from Kraków Główny, or FlixBus/PKS coach; journey to Zakopane (60 zł (13,70 €), environ 180 min)
Pourboire: Tipping is common, around 10 to 15 percent in restaurants and taxis. Rounding up is accepted.
Couvert et frais de service: Cover and service charges are not standard practice in Polish restaurants, so question any unexpected bread or cover charge added to the bill. Check menus show prices before ordering.
Always choose to be charged in PLN and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer bank-attached ATMs over independent machines, which often charge higher fees.
