Faits rapides: La structure en calcaire de cinq étages du musée se dresse sur sa propre île artificielle, reliée à la corniche par deux ponts piétonniers. Sa collection couvre plus de 1 400 ans d'art provenant de trois continents, notamment l'Espagne, la Perse et l'Asie centrale.
Points forts: L'architecte I.M. Pei, alors âgé de 91 ans, a parcouru le monde musulman pendant des mois et a trouvé son inspiration dans la pureté géométrique et simple de la mosquée Ibn Touloun du IXe siècle au Caire. La pierre du musée change de couleur tout au long de la journée, passant d'un miel chaud au lever du soleil à un gris argenté froid sous le soleil du désert de midi.
