À propos
Faits rapides: A painted ceiling from 1620 still survives here, hidden for centuries under layers of whitewash before being rediscovered in the 1970s. Over 500 objects fill the six restored rooms, from a 17th-century merchant's counting house to a working 18th-century kitchen.
Points forts: A cloth merchant named Thomas Gledstanes owned this building in 1617, and his initials still appear carved into the stone outside. The top-floor vaulted chamber once stored his most expensive textiles, keeping them safe from the damp ground below with walls nearly a meter thick.
Conseils d'initiés
- Take the free audio guide, it points out details you will walk right past otherwise.
- The top-floor kitchen has a working 18th-century stove and the staff often light it on special event days.
- Weekend afternoons get packed with tour groups, so aim for a weekday visit instead.
- Look for the tiny 'luckenbooth' window on the ground floor where merchants once sold goods to passersby on the Royal Mile.
