À propos
Faits rapides: Surgeons' Hall Museums hold one of the largest collections of pathological specimens in the UK, with over 12,000 jars and anatomical displays. The museum sits within the historic Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh building, where medical students have trained since the 1500s.
Points forts: One room holds the skeleton of William Burke, one half of the infamous Burke and Hare murder duo, displayed exactly as he was used for anatomy lectures after his execution in 1829. You can stand inches from the actual skull of a serial killer who sold his victims' bodies to the very college now housing his remains.
Conseils d'initiés
- The Wohl Pathology Museum on the top floor has the most intense specimens, so brace yourself before heading up.
- Photography is allowed without flash, but some exhibits are labeled no-photo due to lender restrictions.
- Allow extra time for the temporary exhibition space, which often features rotating collections you won't see online.
- The gift shop sells surprisingly thoughtful anatomical gifts like glass heart necklaces and brain-shaped soap.
