À propos

Faits rapides: The museum sits right above one of Europe's most formidable river gorges, where the Danube narrows dramatically and plunges through the Carpathian mountains. Its outdoor section showcases genuine Roman road segments carved into the cliffs by Emperor Trajan's engineers nearly 2,000 years ago.

Points forts: A massive Roman tabula rasa, a stone inscription carved 50 meters high on the cliffs above the Danube, proclaims Trajan's military triumph to passing boats. You can stand on the same stone roadbed that Roman legionaries used during the Dacian Wars, with deep grooves still worn into the rock by their chariot wheels.

Conseils d'initiés

  • Skip the indoor exhibit first and head straight to the outdoor Roman road and Tabula Traiana carving behind the museum, then circle back inside.
  • Bring polarized sunglasses for spotting the underwater remains of the ancient Roman bridge pillars visible through the river surface on calm days.
  • The viewing terrace above the parking lot offers the best photo angle of the gorge and the inscribed cliff face together.
  • Check if the hydropower plant visitor center is open on the same ticket, it lets you see the Danube from inside the dam.
