Faits rapides: Slovakia's mining history spans over 1,000 years, and this museum sits inside a 19th-century mine that once produced silver, gold, and lead. The underground tunnels stretch nearly 2 kilometers and remain at a constant 8°C, giving visitors an authentic feel of a miner's daily reality.

Points forts: Visitors crawl through narrow tunnels just 120 centimeters tall, exactly as miners did, using only the light of their headlamps. The guides are retired miners who share gritty firsthand stories about explosions, cave-ins, and the camaraderie that kept them alive underground.

• Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and bring a jacket; the mine stays at 8°C regardless of outside weather.
• Book the longer tour (about 2 hours) instead of the short one; the extra 30 minutes includes a section only accessible by crawling.
• Keep your hands free by leaving backpacks in the lockers provided, as some passages require using both hands to climb.
• Headlamp batteries are provided, but bring a small flashlight to spot tiny crystal formations in the walls that the group light often misses.
