À propos

Faits rapides: Slavnik rises 1,028 meters above the Istrian peninsula, making it the highest point in Slovenian Istria. On clear days, the summit offers views stretching across the Gulf of Trieste to the Dolomites and even Croatia's islands.

Points forts: Slavnik's summit has one of the only operational weather radar stations in Slovenia, a massive white dome that looks almost otherworldly against the green hills. Hikers who time their arrival for sunrise can watch the radar dome glow pink while the entire Istrian coast slowly emerges from the morning mist below.

Conseils d'initiés

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots, the trail gets rocky and steep near the top especially after rain.
  • Start from the village of Podgorje to follow the most scenic and well-marked path marked with red waymarkers.
  • Pack a windbreaker even on hot days, the summit is consistently windy and temperatures drop noticeably.
  • Bring binoculars to spot Trieste, the Julian Alps, and even Venice's outline on exceptionally clear days.
