Faits rapides: On y trouve l'un des plus grands ports naturels du monde, point de convergence du commerce depuis des siècles. Les plages de sable blanc s'étendent sur près de 30 kilomètres et l'eau est si claire qu'on en voit le fond à dix mètres de profondeur.
Points forts: Près du littoral se trouvent les ruines d'anciennes cités marchandes des périodes égyptienne et romaine, que le sable a maintes fois englouties et remises au jour au fil des siècles. Les pêcheurs locaux dénichent parfois dans le sable d'anciennes pièces de monnaie et des tessons de poterie qui racontent l'importance lointaine de ce port sur les routes commerciales de l'océan Indien.
