Cruz de Tejeda

Early morning (before 11 AM) for the clearest views before clouds roll into the caldera. Late afternoon also works well when the golden light hits the rock formations.
Conseils budget
No entry fee; the viewpoint and parking are free. Bring cash for the local cheese and almond vendors who set up near the cross, as they rarely accept cards.

À propos
Faits rapides: At 1,560 meters above sea level, the mountain crossroads of Cruz de Tejeda marks the geographic heart of Gran Canaria. The landmark stone cross that gives this place its name was erected in 1946 to commemorate the area's history as a meeting point for shepherds and travelers.
Points forts: Stand at the mirador and you're looking straight into the massive Caldera de Tejeda, an ancient volcanic crater that collapsed 14 million years ago. On clear days, you can trace the island's three distinct climate zones from a single vantage point: the humid pine forests, the dry southern slopes, and the lush northern valleys all visible at once.
Conseils d'initiés
- Pack a jacket even in summer: temperatures at 1,560 meters can be 10°C cooler than the coast with sudden wind gusts.
- Skip the restaurant at the Parador and walk 5 minutes to the roadside stalls for fresh queso de flor (a local goat cheese made with thistle rennet).
- Arrive before 10 AM if you want the stone cross and mirador to yourselves, as tour buses start arriving mid-morning.
- The path behind the cross leads to a short unmarked trail with even better views over the caldera with almost no crowds.
