Faits rapides: Paddling across the reservoir offers front-row views of the Sierra Arana mountain range. The reservoir was created in the 1960s and holds 20 cubic hectometers of water, making it wide enough for hours of exploration along its flooded valleys.

Points forts: Unlike crowded coastal paddle spots, this reservoir sits in a quiet mountain basin where the water reflects the olive groves and limestone peaks with almost mirror-like stillness. On calm mornings, you can paddle right up to submerged tree trunks that rise from the turquoise water, remnants of the original valley floor.

• The eastern launch point near the dam has the calmest water and easiest access for beginners.
