Points forts: The founding surveyors carved a rectangular grid into the flat plain and left a wide central plaza for trade and fiestas, an unheard-of design for 1500s Europe. Colonial governors carried that same drawing across the ocean, and its block pattern still structures old Lima, Havana, and Mexico City.
