Faits rapides: Across the Eresma river valley, this grassy ledge sits directly opposite the Alcázar's sheer cliff face, drawing photographers from all over Europe for a view most visitors never see. The wide meadow stays quiet even when the old town above is shoulder to shoulder with tour groups, and its low stone walls make natural benches for sitting a while.

Points forts: From this meadow, the fortress appears to float on its rocky spur, its pointed towers rising straight out of the Eresma gorge far below. Nearly every postcard view of that castle was shot from this exact spot, and at sunset the stone turns honey-gold while the sierra behind it fades to deep blue.

• Walk down from the city center instead of driving, parking is scarce and the path takes about 15 easy minutes
• Pack a windbreaker, the open meadow gets breezy near the riverbank even on warm days
