Faits rapides: Plus de 80 sanctuaires rupestres sont taillés dans la paroi rocheuse, mais seulement cinq grottes principales sont ouvertes au public. Le site est une destination de pèlerinage depuis plus de 2 000 ans, ce qui en fait l'un des plus anciens et des plus continuellement utilisés complexes de temples rupestres au monde.
Points forts: Près de 1 500 peintures au plafond recouvrent les voûtes des grottes, certaines sections montrant encore des couleurs vives issues de pigments naturels appliqués il y a des centaines d'années. Une grotte abrite un Bouddha couché de 14 mètres de long sculpté directement dans la roche, avec un oreiller en bois conçu pour contenir une relique.

- Wear or carry socks since you must remove shoes at the entrance and the stone path heats up quickly by mid-morning.
- Turn left immediately inside the first cave to spot a small ceiling panel where pigments remain shockingly bright after 400 years.
- Skip the souvenir stalls at the bottom and buy from vendors near the exit instead, prices drop by half.
- Visit on a full moon night if possible, the temple holds special ceremonies with drumming and torchlight that transform the atmosphere.
