Faits rapides: Environ 80 elephants orphelins et blesses vivent et se deplacent librement sur la propriete de 25 acres en bord de riviere. Chaque matin vers 10h, le troupeau traverse les rues jusqu'a la riviere voisine pour son bain quotidien de deux heures, une procession qui attire des milliers de visiteurs.
Points forts: Contrairement aux zoos ou les animaux sont separes des humains par des barrierees, les mahouts (gardiens) vivent aux cotes d'elephants specifiques 24h/24 et 7j/7, formant des liens qui durent des decennies. Un mahout âge nomme Somapala prend soin du meme elephant aveugle nomme Tikiri depuis 35 ans, et elle reconnait immediatement ses pas et sa voix.

- Stand near the riverbank steps around 10am for the best view of the elephants splashing and drinking without fighting the crowd.
- Bring a change of clothes and water shoes if you want to wade into the river with the elephants, but keep a respectful 10-foot distance.
- The baby elephant feeding area gets packed by 9:30am, so arrive early and watch from the elevated platform behind the enclosure.
- Skip the souvenir shops inside the orphanage and buy from local vendors outside the gate where prices are 30-50% lower.
