Faits rapides: Environ 192 mètres de ferronnerie traversent le Rhin ici, et cette petite chapelle rouge au milieu veille sur le passage depuis des siècles. On paie pour traverser cet endroit depuis 1225, quand le pont à péage médiéval a remplacé un ferry risqué, mais aujourd'hui la travée est gratuite pour tous les piétons.

Points forts: Cette petite chapelle au milieu de la travée est un vestige d'une épreuve médiévale brutale : les accusés étaient jetés dans le Rhin depuis le garde-corps, et quiconque parvenait à regagner la surface était déclaré innocent par jugement divin. L'eau reste assez rapide et froide pour que ce rituel ait du sens, surtout les jours de fonte printanière, quand le courant tire fort sur les piliers.

For a clean shot, stand on the east-bank railing beside the chapel and aim toward the cathedral as the sun drops.
Arrive before 9 a.m. on weekends, when trams and tour groups are sparse and the deck feels like it's yours alone.
Take one of the coin-operated cable ferries from the bank below for an unusual look up at the span from the water.
Come back after dark, when the crossing is floodlit and its reflections shimmer on the current, a totally different mood from rush hour.
