Go early morning around 8 AM to beat the tour buses and cruise crowds. The soft morning light also highlights the marble fragments beautifully for photos.

Faits rapides: Quatre sculpteurs de la Grèce antique ont chacun pris un côté du monument, transformant le chantier en une compétition amicale gravée dans la pierre. La structure s'élevait à 45 mètres de haut, soit à peu près la hauteur d'un immeuble de 14 étages, et son nom nous a donné le mot moderne « mausolée » pour désigner tout grand tombeau.
Points forts: Le monument était surmonté d'un immense char en marbre tiré par quatre chevaux, assez grand pour qu'une personne puisse se tenir debout à l'intérieur. Le lion sculpté qui a survécu, l'un des seuls fragments encore préservés, est si réaliste qu'on croirait presque voir ses côtes bouger à chaque respiration.

- Walk behind the main excavation area to the small grassy platform for the best view of where the monument once stood.
- The Bodrum Castle of St. Peter across the harbor contains the original greenstone blocks from the mausoleum's base, built into the castle walls.
- Skip the small on-site museum display and instead head to the British Museum in London if you want to see the surviving statues and friezes.
- Bring water and sun protection, the site has almost no shade and the Aegean sun gets fierce by mid-morning.
