Visit in April when the cherry blossoms and azaleas explode in color, or on a weekday morning in fall when the crowds thin and the light turns the gardens golden.
Conseils budget
Entry is $13 for adults and $8 for children, with free admission for all visitors on Member Mondays (check their calendar). Seniors and students get discounted tickets, and the gardens alone cost less than the full house-and-garden combo.

À propos
Faits rapides: The gardens weave through 10 acres of formal terraces, wild meadows, and a rare pebble garden inspired by Persian and Moorish designs. Its Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art collections include the only Byzantine mosaic in the United States and exquisite Mayan jade carvings.
Points forts: Inside the Music Room, a 16th-century Flemish tapestry covers an entire wall while a 300-year-old harpsichord sits silently in the corner, still playable. The Orangery ceiling is painted with clouds that seem to drift as you move across the marble floor, a Baroque illusion that tricks every visitor who looks up.
Conseils d'initiés
- Skip the museum shop and head straight to the Garden Library, which has a hidden reading room overlooking the terrace.
- Photograph the Ellipse at 4 PM in spring when the wisteria drapes the pergola in purple light.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes because the gravel paths and steep steps between garden levels are hard on sandals.
- Arrive right at opening time to have the Star Garden entirely to yourself for at least 15 minutes.
