À propos
Faits rapides: More than 58,000 names are etched into the black granite panels, listed in chronological order of casualty date rather than alphabetically. Visitors often leave personal mementos at the wall, and the National Park Service collects over 2,000 items each year for preservation.
Points forts: The wall's black granite acts like a mirror, so when you look at the names you also see your own reflection superimposed on them, connecting the living with the fallen. As you walk the path descending from ground level, the wall rises from 8 inches tall at the ends to over 10 feet at the center, creating a wound-like gash in the earth that gradually heals as you walk back up.
Conseils d'initiés
- Bring a piece of paper and a soft pencil to make a rubbing of a name that means something to you.
- If you're looking for a specific name, use the onsite directory kiosks or download the app in advance to find panel and line numbers.
- Arrive early morning on weekdays to avoid crowds; weekends and spring break can get extremely busy.
- Walk the entire length from one end to the other to experience the full emotional arc as the wall rises and falls.
