Γρήγορα στοιχεία: Some 10,000 vermilion torii gates snake up the mountainside in a 4-kilometer loop trail. The climb passes over 200 individual shrines and takes most visitors around two to three hours round trip.
Αξιοσημείωτα: At the trail's halfway mark, roughly 30 minutes up, you hit Yotsutsuji Intersection, where the city of Kyoto sprawls below in a panoramic sweep. Get there for sunrise and you'll share the viewpoint with maybe a handful of early risers instead of the thousands of people who flood in by mid-morning.

- Wear sturdy shoes, the stone steps get slick with moss and the climb is steeper than it looks.
- The crowd thins dramatically after the first kilometer, so push past the dense section near the bottom for a quieter experience.
- Small foxes (kitsune) statues mark the entrance, they're messengers of the shrine and worth a photo before the crowds gather.
- Bring a flashlight in the evening, the upper sections of the trail have no lighting after dark.
