The best things to do in Poprad, Slovakia begin at AquaCity Poprad, a sprawling thermal water park fed by local springs at 34°C year-round. Hike the trails of Tatra National Park (TANAP) just minutes from town, where peaks exceed 2,600 meters. Then explore Poprad Town Square, a Gothic core lined with 16th-century burgher houses and the towering Church of St. Egidius.

Float in 38°C geothermal waters while snow falls around you, at one of Europe's most eco-friendly aqua parks. Soak in a dozen indoor and outdoor pools, steam rooms, and water slides all powered by the earth's own heat.

Brze činjenice: More than 300,000 visitors soak in the geothermal waters here every year, drawn from a well that reaches nearly 2,500 meters underground. The water surfaces at a piping 49°C and is naturally rich in calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, prized for their therapeutic effects on skin and joints.

Istaknuto: One of the few water parks in Europe that runs entirely on geothermal energy, with the same underground heat that fills the pools also powering the entire complex. Even on a snowy winter evening, the outdoor thermal pools stay at a toasty 36-38°C, creating an almost surreal contrast of steam rising around you while flakes fall from the sky.

Slovakia's wildest alpine playground where eagles soar over glacial valleys and waterfalls thunder through narrow gorges. Hike through meadows dotted with edelweiss, breathe crisp mountain air, and spot marmots sunbathing on granite boulders.

Brze činjenice: Carpathian brown bears roam freely across these 738 square kilometers of alpine wilderness, with roughly 40 bears calling the park home. More than 600 kilometers of marked hiking trails wind through valleys carved by ancient glaciers, leading to crystal-clear mountain lakes that sit above 1,600 meters in elevation.

Istaknuto: Step onto the symbolic path of the Téryho chata mountain hut, where a century-old tradition lets you stamp a unique wooden token as proof of your summit conquest. Above 2,000 meters, the rocky lunar landscape of the Velická valley contrasts sharply with the dense spruce forests below, creating a surreal transition you won't forget.

Discover the soul of the High Tatras through 200,000 artifacts spanning art, nature and daily life. Wander from a Gothic altar to a 1920s camera obscura in a single afternoon.

Brze činjenice: More than 200,000 preserved artifacts span everything from Gothic religious art to a 19th-century pharmacy with original ceramic jars. The museum also houses the largest collection of historical photographs and postcards in the entire Spiš region.

Istaknuto: One room re-creates a 1920s photographer's studio complete with glass plate negatives and a massive wooden bellows camera that visitors can peek inside. Another space holds a perfectly preserved Tatra shepherd's cottage interior, where the smoky peat smell from the open hearth still seems to linger in the woolen textiles.

Step into a 13th-century church that holds one of Europe's finest collections of original Gothic altars. You'll stand face to face with 500-year-old wooden sculptures that survived wars, fires, and centuries of silence.

Brze činjenice: Three Gothic altars from the 15th and 16th centuries survive inside this Lutheran church in Spišská Sobota, one of the best-preserved medieval altar ensembles in Slovakia. The church sits on a square that once hosted executions, with a pillory still standing nearby.

Istaknuto: The main Gothic altarpiece towers 12 meters high and features 126 detailed figures carved from linden wood, all original from 1516. Gold-leaf details still shimmer after 500 years because the church was never sacked or repainted.

Popradské Pleso

LakePrirodna značajkaUstanova

Crystal clear alpine lake with mirror reflections of the High Tatras peaks. Walk the scenic lakeside trail, spot grazing marmots, and dip your toes in water colder than 5°C even in August.

Brze činjenice: The glacial lake sits at 1,512 meters above sea level in the High Tatras and covers about 7.5 hectares. Its crystal clear emerald green water reaches depths of up to 17 meters, fed by the Hincov potok stream and surrounded by towering granite peaks.

Istaknuto: On calm mornings, the still surface of this glacial lake perfectly mirrors the jagged silhouette of Mount Kôprovský štít, creating a reflection so sharp you might mistake it for reality. Pack a thermos of hot tea and arrive before 8 a.m. to catch this phenomenon with only the occasional marmot whistle breaking the silence.

Where else can you walk through a perfectly preserved armory and climb a 200-foot wooden bell tower in one visit? Here you will touch medieval stone walls, sniff gunpowder residue in the bastions, and hear your footsteps echo across original oak floors.

Brze činjenice: Three defensive moats and five bastions protected this fortification, yet it was never breached by force. The castle was converted into a town museum in the early 20th century, housing over 10,000 historical artifacts.

Istaknuto: A hidden fresco cycle from the 14th century still survives inside the chapel, painted directly onto the walls by an unknown artist. These faded murals depicting knightly virtues have survived fires, wars, and centuries of neglect without ever being restored.

Spiš Castle

7. Spiš Castle

4.6 (16,710)
CastleTuristička atrakcijaPovijesno mjestoTočka interesaUstanova

One of Europe's largest medieval fortresses, sprawling across a hilltop with views that stretch for miles. Walk through ruined halls, climb the tower, and feel the raw history in every weathered stone.

Brze činjenice: Perched on a travertine hill 200 meters above the surrounding countryside, this medieval fortress ranks among Europe's largest castle complexes by area. Its sheer size and strategic position once made it the administrative, military, and cultural center of the region, covering nearly four and a half acres.

Istaknuto: Look closely at the outer walls and you'll spot original Gothic windows and Romanesque carvings left untouched for centuries, not reconstructed replicas. The castle's gradual decay over 300 years actually preserved authentic medieval stonework that more "restored" castles lack.

Food was decent and cheap compared to other European spots. Got a huge hearty meal near the square for like 8 euros. Weather was rainy in June though, pack layers.

Skip the restaurants right on the square. Walk toward the Tesco side streets and you'll find better bryndzove halusky for half the price. Locals eat there.

Poprad itself is fine as a base but honestly the town center is a bit sleepy. The real magic is getting up to the High Tatras, that's where it's at. Give yourself 3 days minimum.

Not gonna lie, I was a bit underwhelmed. Expected more charm from the main square but a lot of places were closed on Monday. Maybe I caught it on a bad day.

Buy the Ziak bus pass from the info center if you're under 26. Way cheaper than paying per ride to get up to Strbske Pleso and the trails. Saved me a ton.
