Fatti rapidi: Un tempo i bisonti vagavano per il continente a milioni, e ne rimanevano solo 300 alla fine del 1800. Elk Island è il luogo dove quegli ultimi sopravvissuti furono portati per ricostruire la specie, rendendolo uno dei siti di conservazione della fauna selvatica più importanti del pianeta.

Punti salienti: I laghi discreti del parco nascondono un segreto: naviga sul lago Astotin all'alba e vedrai sagome di bisonti che guadano nella nebbia come fantasmi del Pleistocene. Più di 600 bisonti che vagano liberamente vivono qui, discendenti degli stessi animali che salvarono la specie dall'estinzione.

• Pack binoculars and drive the Bison Loop Road slowly: herds often block the road and you'll want to watch from your car, not approach on foot.
• Bring a red light flashlight for stargazing: white light ruins night vision and the park is one of 13 Dark Sky Preserves in Canada.
• Skip the short interpretive trails if you're short on time and head straight to the 10-km Tawayik Lake Trail for the best mix of forest, lakeside, and wildlife views.
• Visit the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village right next door on the same day: it's a 1920s living history museum with costumed interpreters and a pioneer bakery.
