Fatti rapidi: Il pilastro di granito di 40 metri segna il punto in cui l'Imperatore Haile Selassie fu brevemente esiliato durante l'occupazione italiana del 1936. Intorno al monumento ci sono 12 rilievi in pietra scolpiti dall'artista etiope Afewerk Tekle, ognuno raffigurante un evento importante nella lotta per l'indipendenza del paese.
Punti salienti: Cammina intorno alla base e scoprirai che il leone scolpito non è solo una statua ma un reliquiario: all'interno, lastre di bronzo custodiscono terra di ciascuna delle province storiche dell'Etiopia. Nelle mattine limpide, la luce del sole colpisce la criniera del leone esattamente alle 9:17 durante l'equinozio di primavera, creando un'ombra netta che punta direttamente verso il vecchio Palazzo Imperiale.
