Fatti rapidi: Perched 430 meters up Monte Pellegrino, this sanctuary was carved directly into the mountainside cliff face. The site marks the cave where Santa Rosalia, Palermo's patron saint, spent her final years as a hermit in the 12th century.
Punti salienti: Three million pilgrims climb the 132 steps to this cave sanctuary every year during the July festino, many walking barefoot as a sign of devotion. Inside the candlelit grotto, Rosalia's marble statue lies beneath a shower of gold ex-votos, jewelry and silver hearts left by locals whose prayers were answered.
