Informazioni

Fatti rapidi: For decades this massive coastal fortress sat abandoned and forgotten, its gun batteries rusting against the Mediterranean sky. Only after a 1.5 million euro restoration did it reopen in 2022, revealing a military complex that once housed hundreds of soldiers.

Punti salienti: Step inside the commander's quarters and you will find ghostly murals still peeling from the walls, hand-painted by stationed soldiers who decorated their bunkrooms with alpine landscapes and alpine cabins they desperately wished they were guarding instead. The vast ammunition tunnels descend 15 meters underground, a cool and echoing labyrinth where the only sound is dripping seawater.

Consigli da insider

  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes; some tunnel floors are uneven and can be slippery.
  • The rooftop gun platform offers the best photo spot, especially during sunset.
  • Skip the guided audio tour and download the free PDF map instead to explore at your own pace.
  • Arrive early or late to avoid the midsummer heat, as most of the fortress interior lacks climate control.
