Xochimilco Canals (Floating Gardens)
Periodo migliore per visitare
Early morning or late afternoon on weekdays, when the light is best and fewer boats crowd the canals. Dry months from November to April bring cooler weather and less chance of rain.
Consigli per il budget
No general entry fee applies, but private trajineras rent by the hour so per-person cost varies; save by sharing a boat, booking ahead for groups, or visiting on weekdays when rates are lower.

Informazioni
Fatti rapidi: Gliding along narrow, reed-fringed lanes, you can hear marimba music and watch families picnic from brightly painted boats while vendors drift by with fresh flowers and snacks. More than 170 kilometers of waterways survive within the urban sprawl, offering one of the largest remaining examples of chinampa agriculture where gardeners still cultivate floating plots by hand.
Punti salienti: Paddle past narrow chinampa gardens first dug in the 14th century, where farmers still layer lake mud and reeds to grow corn, flowers and chinampa-grown cilantro on plots only a few meters wide. Brightly painted wooden trajineras, each often seating about 10 people, drift under strings of papel picado while mariachi bands climb aboard to sing, and vendors in small boats sell smoking esquites and cold pulque between the floating rows.
Consigli da insider
- Wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable shoes for walking to and from the embarcadero.
- Bring small bills and cash for the boat, food vendors, mariachi tips and bathroom fees.
- Sit in the middle of the trajinera for the best photos of chinampas, and ask the boatman to pass close to floating gardens.
- Avoid weekend midday peak by going early on a weekday, and skip loud party boats if you want a calmer ride.
