Lofotenų vikingų muziejus

Periodo migliore per visitare

Go in July or August, when the museum offers guided tours in English at set times each day. The midnight sun gives you extra late evening hours, letting you explore the outdoor area until 10 PM.

Consigli per il budget

Entry costs around 160 NOK for adults, with free admission for children under 6. If you're visiting multiple Viking sites in Norway, check if the Bergen or Oslo Viking ship museums offer combo cards that don't apply here as this is a separate independent museum.

Informazioni

Fatti rapidi: The Lofoten Viking Museum houses the longest Viking house ever found, stretching 83 meters from end to end. Inside, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a massive feasting hall where chieftains once hosted hundreds of guests for three-day drinking parties.

Punti salienti: You can stand inside the reconstructed great hall and feel the 5-meter-high roof beams towering above you, built from 28 tons of Norwegian pine. The museum reconstructed the hall right on top of the original excavation site, so the charcoal and post holes you see in the floor are the actual 1,000-year-old remains.

Consigli da insider

  • Request the audio guide in English it includes interviews with the actual archaeologists who excavated the site.
  • Skip the gift shop until the end the real treasure is the outdoor walking path that circles the entire longhouse.
  • Bring a jacket even in summer the wind off the Vestfjord cuts through the open reconstruction.
  • Visit on a weekday morning around 10 AM to have the great hall nearly to yourself for photo taking.
