Most museums offer free entry late afternoon, check their websites for schedules. Also, the Mercado de San Miguel is good for a quick taste but pricey, try smaller local mercados instead.

Get the Madrid metro 10-trip ticket; it saved me tons over single rides. Also, avoid eating right on Plaza Mayor, a few blocks away had much better, cheaper options.

Madrid is packed with tourists, which honestly makes finding quiet spots tough. Food prices near major sights were a bit steep, but the churros made up for it. Two days gave me a good taste.

Chilly evenings in Madrid Centro caught me off guard in October. Lots to see but crowds can be overwhelming on weekends. Try to visit museums early morning if you can.
