Informazioni

Fatti rapidi: This 4th century BC stone gateway once guarded the 7-kilometer-long walls of ancient Halicarnassus, the original name for Bodrum. The marble blocks were so precisely cut that they fit together without any mortar, and deep wheel ruts still visible in the street stones show where chariots passed through.

Punti salienti: Look closely at the southern tower and you will spot nearly 200 ancient graffiti carvings left by soldiers and mercenaries who guarded this gate 2,300 years ago. Among the scratchings are warship etchings and a rare Phoenician inscription, a direct message from a homesick guard stationed far from his homeland.

Consigli da insider

  • Walk around to the back of the southern tower to spot the ancient Greek graffiti carved into the stones.
  • Visit right before sunset when the golden limestone glows and the tourist groups have left.
  • Combine this with the nearby ancient theater ruins, a 10-minute walk uphill.
  • Skip the small souvenir stand inside and buy water beforehand from shops on the main road.
