Fatti rapidi: Più di 30 chiese e cappelle rupestri si raggruppano all'interno di questo complesso monastico scolpito nel tenero tufo vulcanico. Diverse cappelle conservano vividi affreschi bizantini dell'XI secolo, con la Chiesa Oscura che ha preservato i suoi dipinti grazie a secoli di oscurità quasi totale.
Punti salienti: La Chiesa Oscura ha guadagnato il suo nome perché non ha quasi finestre, e quell'oscurità perenne è esattamente il motivo per cui i suoi affreschi biblici dell'XI secolo sono sopravvissuti in condizioni così perfette. Un singolo fascio di luce naturale colpisce l'affresco della cupola del Cristo Pantocratore con l'angolazione giusta, facendo sembrare le aureole dorate brillare contro lo sfondo blu intenso.
