Punti salienti: The Dark Church earned its name because it has almost no windows, and that perpetual gloom is exactly why its 11th-century biblical frescoes survived in such pristine condition. A single shaft of natural light hits the dome painting of Christ Pantocrator at just the right angle, making the golden halos seem to glow against the deep blue background.
