Freedom Trail
Periodo migliore per visitare
Weekday mornings in spring or fall deliver cooler air, thinner crowds, and low sun that glints off the red paint. Winter afternoons also work if you layer up, since every stop is outdoors.
Consigli per il budget
Walking the entire route costs nothing, and the church, the burial grounds, and the hilltop monument are free to enter. Only a few house museums charge fees, typically around $6 each, so you can keep the whole day under $15 by skipping the paid interiors.

Informazioni
Fatti rapidi: A 4-kilometer ribbon of red brick winds past 16 historic sites from a city's central green to a hilltop obelisk. Journalist William Schofield dreamed up the route in 1951, and within months volunteers painted the first bricks to test the idea.
Punti salienti: The painted line is just 20 centimeters wide, yet roughly 4 million people follow it yearly, many pacing backward while squinting at paper maps. Inside the brick church from 1723, the two lanterns that once flashed the warning for a famous midnight ride still sit in a glass case.
Consigli da insider
- Walk the route in reverse from the hilltop monument to end downhill in the old town center and save your legs.
- Free ranger-led walks launch hourly from the starting green each summer, dishing out stories the plaques leave out.
- Grippy shoes matter on rainy days, because the painted bricks and cobblestones turn slick fast.
- Head out at 4 p.m. in summer to dodge the midday tour crush and catch golden light along the brick line.
