Quick facts: It is the only surviving section of the medieval walls of Koper, with the massive wooden clock dominating the passage. Built in the 16th century, it was the main entrance to the old town for centuries, protecting the inhabitants from raids.
Highlights: On summer evenings, the square in front of the gate fills with residents sitting on its steps, enjoying ice cream and the view of the marina. Few know that the gate's bell tower was once used as a lookout for spotting pirates in the Adriatic.
