Raske fakta: Over 4,000 plant species and varieties fill close to two acres of steep, south-facing hillside, arranged like a living climate test plot. William Roland Reader, Calgary's first superintendent of parks, built the collection a century ago to prove which plants could survive the city's brutal winters and short summers.
Høydepunkter: At the top of the garden, a rocky lookout frames the entire hillside tumbling toward the river, while the restored 1916 keeper's cottage anchors the view below. Spring turns the slope into a patchwork of thousands of tulips and crocuses that bloom weeks earlier here than anywhere else in the city thanks to the warm south-facing exposure.

- Wear sturdy shoes, the gravel paths get steep and slick after rain or snow.
- Stand on the upper terrace for the best overview of the whole garden and river valley.
- Flowers peak in May and June, but September brings a second wave of late perennials and fall color.
- Visit on a weekday morning to dodge the tour groups and have the benches to yourself.
