The chairlift costs about 12,000 CLP round trip (roughly US$13), while driving to the foot of the volcano and exploring the base is free with your own car. Raske fakta: Den 2 652 meter høye kjeglen reiser seg rett fra en innsjøstrand, en symmetri så perfekt at den har stått inn for Fuji-fjellet i film- og TV-opptak. Breene renner fortsatt nedover fjellsidene i dag, men det siste utbruddet kom så nylig som i 1869.

En knirkende rød-hvit taubane har fraktet skiløpere oppover skråningen siden 1936, noe som gjør den til en av Sør-Amerikas eldste heiser som fortsatt er i drift.

- Pack at least three layers even in January, the wind at the upper station feels like winter at 2,000-plus meters.
- Shoot from the lake beaches below at golden hour, that is when the glacier glows orange and the reflection is sharpest.
- Skip the guided add-ons, the base area has a simple cafeteria and the same panorama comes free from the parking lot.
- Get to the gate before 10 a.m. to beat tour buses and catch an empty, glassy lake for photos.
