Raske fakta: Vannet holder nær ti ganger havets saltholdighet, likevel vrimler det av liv på de grunne bunnflatene. Her på 2 300 meters høyde, midt i verdens tredje største saltfelt, samles opp mot 40 000 flamingoer fra tre arter når sesongen er på sitt beste.
Høydepunkter: En hel flokk rosa spiser seg rosa: flamingoenes farge kommer fra de små rekene Artemia salina som kryr i saltlaken, og jo flere bytter, desto sterkere drakt. Gå ut på skorpa når vinden løyer og hør hvordan hvert skritt knaser som knust glass mens speilblanke laguner dobbler fjellene.
Insidertips
- Put on your sunglasses already at the entrance, the salt reflections are blinding between ten and four.
- Aim for weekdays before eight o'clock, then you'll have almost the whole place to yourself.
- Walk to the far end of the boardwalk and sit still for ten minutes, then the flamingos will dare to come close.
- Bring a windbreaker, cold gusts blow in from the Andes even in the middle of summer.
